The North Canterbury Support for Gifted and Talented Children (NCSGTC) was established in 1996 to support families with children who are gifted and talented and to also provide information and resources for schools to help them better understand the needs of these children.

We have an active committee, organise regular interesting events which give the children and parents a chance to get together and run Parent Support evenings.  We have an excellent library of books and materials relevant to parenting gifted and talented children and we put out a bimonthly newsletter for members.

MISSION STATEMENT

To extend the abilities of gifted and talented children by providing a supportive environment for them, their families and their schools.

HOW TO IDENTIFY GIFTED AND TALENTED CHILDREN

Gifted and talented children have a wide range of personalities and display different strengths and weaknesses, as all children do.  There is no typical gifted/talented child but there are a number of characteristics that may indicate a child is gifted and talented.  If a child displays most of the following characteristics he/she may be gifted.

*early language development with extensive vocabulary and

  understanding

*intensive curiosity with searching questions, or evidence of wide or deep knowledge

*excellent memory with detail and accuracy in recall

*unusual concentration and dedication to tasks

*wide and varied interests at an advanced level

*school achievement and performance ahead of age peers
